On Monday, June 13, 2022, the Aquaculture Study Program of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science (FPIK), Mulawarman University (UNMUL), successfully organized a discussion themed “Appropriate Technology in Freshwater Fish Hatchery and Grow-out.” This event, a collaboration with the community of Ponoragan Village, Kutai Kartanegara Regency, took place at the FPIK UNMUL building and included laboratory visits.

The discussion was attended by representatives from FPIK UNMUL’s Aquaculture study program and several members of the Ponoragan Village community interested in freshwater fish farming. The goal was to foster interaction between academics and the community, and to exchange knowledge on utilizing appropriate technology in fish hatching and grow-out processes.

The event commenced with welcoming remarks from the Dean of FPIK UNMUL, who lauded the collaboration as a tangible effort to apply scientific knowledge for the betterment of local communities. The discussion continued with presentations from academic experts on the latest technologies in freshwater fish hatchery and grow-out, including the use of water recirculation systems, optimally nutritious feed, and effective pond environment management.

During the Q&A session, the community members of Ponoragan Village enthusiastically asked questions and shared their experiences in freshwater fish farming. This discussion not only imparted new knowledge but also built a strong network between academics and practitioners in the field.

Following the discussion, participants were invited to visit the Aquaculture laboratory at FPIK UNMUL. In the laboratory, they observed firsthand examples of the technologies discussed, such as controlled hatchery systems and innovations in fish grow-out.

With the success of this event, the hope is for such collaborations to continue, positively impacting the development of local communities in the fisheries sector, and encouraging the adoption of appropriate technologies that support environmental and economic sustainability.
